What mental health support can the Centre provide?
Unfortunately the LGBT community has statistically higher levels of mental health problems from the general population. These include depression and anxiety, self harm, drug and alcohol dependence and suicidal behaviour. Extra stresses that LGBT people face such as the process of 'coming out' can exacerbate these problems.
.
Some people have also had negative experiences when disclosing their gender identity or sexual orientation to mental health services. We can support you in making sure your views and wishes are heard by those in your care such as a GP, CPN or pychiatrist.
.
If you wish to look at your thought, feelings and behaviours in a therpeutic setting, we can offer individual and group work - including life coaching, counselling and art therapy.
.
We can also offer more informal one-to-one support. This may be a one-off appointment or more regular sessions where we work together on issues you identify as important.
.
The service is free and confidential. Contact us to discuss your situation or make an appointment. For further info Alison, our Mental Health Development worker is available on alison@lgbthealth.org.uk, 0131 652 3283 or 0131 523 1100.
