How you can make a difference

The Scottish Government is seeking input on its proposed legislation to ban conversion practices in Scotland. These harmful and abusive practices aim to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. They cause severe damage to LGBTQ+ individuals and have no place in a society that values equality and respect.

Conversion practices, often referred to as “conversion therapies,” take many forms. They might involve family members, religious leaders, therapists, or health practitioners attempting to change or suppress someone’s identity. These actions harm individuals and violate their right to live authentically. You can learn more about what these practices involve by visiting our support page.

You can respond to the consultation here.

Our position

As an organisation dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, we stand firmly against conversion practices. Here’s how we plan to respond to key questions in the consultation:

  • Question 1: We’ll answer “Yes” because these practices are abusive, harmful, and ineffective. Protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from such harm is vital.
  • Question 3: Our response will be “It should be covered,” as every LGBTQ+ person deserves to live authentically without fear or coercion.
  • Question 17: We’ll say “Yes” because conversion practices are a form of abuse, and consent to abuse is not possible.

Our complete response will be available soon.
