About us
We are Scotland’s LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing charity, here to support every LGBTQ+ person live well and thrive.
LGBT Health and Wellbeing was founded in 2003 by community members who wanted something simple: a Scotland where every LGBTQ+ person can thrive. Over 20 years on, that vision continues to guide us as we adapt and respond in the face of change.
Our story is part of a much bigger legacy of community care. In 1974, LGBTQ+ activists set up Scotland’s first helpline (the Lothian Gay and Lesbian Switchboard) from a home phone in Marchmont. It answered 10,000 calls in its first decade and became a constant source of support during moments like the HIV/AIDS epidemic and Section 28. After serving our community for 35 years, LGBT Health and Wellbeing were proud to take on the responsibility of maintaining this lifeline.
Today, we support LGBTQ+ people across Scotland through services that help our community stay well and connected. Our work is rooted in providing affirming support that meets people where they are and in advocating for a Scotland where everyone can live well.
We offer a range of support to help people build connection and confidence. From community-led groups and wellbeing activities, through to information, signposting, and emotional support delivered in groups and one-to-one. For those who need more structured support, we also provide accredited counselling, ensuring people can access the right support at the right time.
