LGBT+ Helpline Scotland: extended support and access

LGBT Health and Wellbeing has made changes to our helpline service to make it more accessible for all LGBTQ+ people in Scotland. We’ve updated our name to LGBT+ Helpline Scotland, added a freephone number, extended hours, and introduced support in British Sign Language and for survivors of conversion practices.

LGBT Health and Wellbeing has introduced several important changes to our helpline service. These changes aim to make our support more accessible and inclusive for all LGBTQ+ individuals (16+) in Scotland. Our goal is to reduce barriers and ensure that everyone who needs help can easily access it.

What’s new?

Updated Name

We’ve changed our name to LGBT+ Helpline Scotland. This new name reflects our commitment to supporting a wide range of identities and experiences within the LGBTQ+ community. We welcome people who may not use a label or who are still exploring their identity. Our service is for everyone.

New Freephone Number

To make our helpline more accessible, we now offer a freephone number: 0800 464 7000. This ensures that anyone in Scotland can reach out for help without worrying about phone costs.

Extended Hours

We understand that people need help at different times. That’s why we’ve extended our hours on Thursdays to be open from 12pm to 9pm. This gives people more flexibility to contact us when it’s most convenient for them.

Support in Multiple Languages

We strive to support people in many languages, depending on what is available in our team. This ensures that language doesn’t become a barrier for those who need assistance. Our multilingual support reflects our commitment to inclusivity.

Support in British Sign Language (BSL)

We now offer support in British Sign Language (BSL) for LGBTQ+ D/deaf users. This service is available every Thursday from 6pm to 9pm. The service is part of a pilot project that will run until March 2024. We hope to expand this offering in the future.

Support for Survivors of Conversion Practices

Our helpline team has received special training to support individuals who have experienced, or may be at risk of, conversion practices. Thanks to funding from the Scottish Government, we are the first helpline in Scotland to provide tailored support for survivors of conversion practices.

Why These Changes Matter

At LGBT+ Helpline Scotland, we are committed to improving support for the LGBTQ+ community. These changes allow us to better meet the needs of our users and ensure that everyone feels heard, respected, and valued. We are here to support you every step of the way.
