Supporting Trans and Non-Binary people: launch of trans counselling service in Glasgow

A recent report shows that trans and non-binary people experience higher levels of isolation and worse mental health than cisgender LGB+ people. To support them, we've launched a Trans Counselling Service in Glasgow. People can refer themselves by filling out a form, and sessions will be available after an intake appointment.

A recent report from Public Health Scotland, in collaboration with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and NHS Lothian, reveals that trans and non-binary individuals in Glasgow face significantly poorer mental health compared to their cisgender LGB+ counterparts. In light of these findings, we have launched a Trans Counselling Service Glasgow to provide essential support to this community.

Mental health challenges for Trans and Non-Binary people

The LGBTI Health Needs Assessment highlighted several key issues facing trans and non-binary individuals:

Isolation and Loneliness: Trans and non-binary people experience the highest levels of isolation within the LGBTQ+ community.

Suicide Attempts: Nearly half of those identifying as trans masculine or non-binary reported having attempted suicide.

Mental Wellneing: Trans masculine and non-binary individuals are the least likely to report positive mental wellbeing compared to other groups.

These statistics demonstrate the urgent need for accessible mental health support tailored to the trans and non-binary community.

You can read the full results of the report here.

Our response: trans counselling service in Glasgow

To address these challenges, we have launched the Trans Counselling Service Glasgow. This new service aims to provide specialised counselling and mental health support for trans and non-binary individuals in Glasgow.

The service is currently open for new referrals. To refer yourself or someone else, please complete the referral form and send it to glasgow@lgbthealth.org.uk.

How the service works

Due to high demand, it may take some time to schedule an intake appointment. We aim to contact all referrals within 6 weeks to arrange an appointment. The more flexible you can be with your availability, the quicker we will be able to allocate you a slot. Once your intake session is completed, you will be offered 11 consecutive weekly counselling sessions.
